Jacques Marquette

Around four centuries ago in the midst of Laon, France a young Christian boy was born. The exact year this fellow entered this world was the year of 1637. This fellow was no ordinary man. He would soon convert many people to the faith of Christianity.   This person was known as Jacques Marquette.

Not much is known about this devout Christian until he turned 17, which is when he entered the Society of Jesus. He made the title of Priest in 1675. Not only that but on the same year he sailed for Canada. Jacques Marquette reached Quebec on September 20, 1675.

After that he went to a place known as “Three Rivers”, and reached there on the date of October 10. The reason for that was because he was learning the two languages: Algonquin and Huron. His teacher was Gabriel Druilleteo. “In 1668 Jacques Marquette was ordered to return to Quebec.”

Once he returned he went on a mission that started on Lake Superior. It was known as “ Sault Sainte Marie.” A church was built and many Indians converted. Jacques Marquette founded the St. Ignatius in which he built a Church.

Then in the year 1673 Joliet was ordered to take Marquette as a companion for his expedition. He was known for a keen scientific eye and was a guide to the expedition. On March 29 they set out and reached Kaskaskia with great difficulty on April 8. When Jacques Marquette reached there he converted 2000 men and even more women to Christianity. Soon he became so weak he had to be lifted out of his canoe. On the Eve of his death he predicted he would die the next day.

Jacques Marquette was both a devoted to expedition and to his faith of Christianity. He may not be as famous as other people who have affected the world. But he also helped the world in his own way. I hope you learned a lot about Jacques Marquette after reading this story.
