Giovanni Verazzano

Giovanni Verazzano was a famous France explorer born in 1485 near Florence. Verazzano had a very noble family. He was a well educated person. Even though Giovanni is Italian but, he became a French explorer because when he was a young he moved to France and worked for King Francis. Almost nothing is known about is early life except of his birth and a few other things. Giovanni Verazzano made three voyages as an explorer.

When Giovanni was young he moved to France and became a sailor. Giovanni Verazzano sailed on merchant ships. These ships sailed to the Mediterranean Sea and back. Soon after that Giovanni became a pirate for a while. Giovanni would attack ships that belonged to Spain or Portugal. Giovanni Verazzano also captured a Spanish treasure ship that was coming from Mexico. The gold on the treasure ship was worth almost two million dollars. After his days as a pirate he then became and explorer and navigator. His first voyage was to the New World, but is now North America.

In 1525 King Francis sent Giovanni and an expedition to the New World. King Francis wanted Verazzano to find and claim land for France. Giovanni Verazzano went with four ships. His ship was the Dauphine. Out of four ships Verazzano’s ship was the only ship that made it to the New World. When arriving to the New World they first went to North Carolina. Verazzano explored from North Carolina to Newfoundland, exploring most of the Atlantic Coast. From North Carolina he kept on sailing north and reached Rhode Island. He went on further north and reached Maine. From Maine he went to Newfoundland. Giovanni Verazzano discovered many new places. Because of his discoveries some places and things are named after Giovanni Verazzano.

Giovanni Verazzano discovered many new places while on his first voyage to the new world. Verazzano discovered Block Island and Narragansett Bay.  The Verazzano Narragansett Bridge is also named after Giovanni Verazzano. The Narrows of the Bay are also named after him. Verazzano’s most famous discovery is when he discovered The New York Harbor. A statue was also made after Giovanni. He is mostly known for his discovery of the New York Harbor and for being the first man to explore the Atlantic Coast of North America. These are Giovanni’s discoveries.

On Giovanni’s second voyage he went to Brazil in 1527. In Brazil his crew cut down wood. This wood was used to dye cloth. In 1528 he made his last and final voyage. This time he went to Florida. On his ship with Verazzano was his brother Girolomo. Girolomo witnessed Giovanni’s terrible death. After Florida his ship landed in islands known as the Lesser Antilles. On the island Guadeloupe Verazzano went ashore. There he met some natives. He didn’t know that the natives were cannibals. The cannibals captured him and then killed him. They ate Giovanni Verazzano right away. Girolomo and Verazzano’s crew saw all this. They couldn’t help him because they were too far away to shoot the natives with their guns or to come ashore and rescue him. After this they went back to France to tell this story.

Giovanni Verazzano was a France explorer to discovered many things. On his first voyage he discovered many new places and without him these places may not have been discovered till years later.
