            About Jacques Cartier

Jacques Cartier was a French navigator and explorer. He lived from 1491 up to 1557 in which he died at the age of 66. He was married to Catherine Des Granches who was the daughter of Jacques Des Granches a chevalier du roi ( a French word which means 'knight king' or 'king of knights') and the constable of Saint- Malo.
In all, Jacques Cartier lead 3 voyages with 5 five ships. His first ship was the Grande Hermine, next was the Petite Hermine, third was the Emerillon, then the Georges, and lastly the Saint Brieux. His first voyage lasted 137 days from France, to Newfoundland and back to France.
In about April 24 to April 30 he reached New foundland through the the St. Lawrence River. Jacques Cartier is most famous because of his discovery of the St. Lawrence River. He is also famous for discovering Newfoundland which he called 'Kanata'.
Today, Kanata is called Canada. Kanata means village or settlement in Huron Iroquois language of the Natives. Another part of important inform ation is that Jacques Cartier accompanied  Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano on his own voyage to North America. He explored the northeast coast of North America, traveling from Cape Fear, to North Carolina, to Maine, and even to Brazil.
Even though Giovanni da Verrazano was Italian he was considered a French explorer, because he sailed under the French flag for King Francois I of France. His main goal in Canada was to make settlements and bring back gold which natives told them about. Unfortunately he came back with little men with no gold.
